I finally have entered the world of blogging. I hope you may have thoughts that you might like to share with me on the Sermon Series that I am doing on the Psalms of Ascent (Psalms 120-134). There are 15 Psalms called the Psalms of Ascent or Degrees. Some people may also refer to them as the Pilgrim Psalms. These 15 Psalms were sung by the
Jewish people (men, women and boys 12 and older) who were making their pilgrimage from their small villages or towns around Jerusalem each year for one of the three main festivals. The routes the people took to get to Jerusalem were up hill and thus these Psalms are called Psalms of Ascent.
These 15 Psalms can be put into five groups of three sets. The 1st Psalm in each set deals with some element of TROUBLE the people were facing. The 2nd Psalms in each set deals with some element of TRUST the people were encouraged to have. The 3rd Psalm in each set had to do with TRIUMP the people would experience if they trusted God. We are all on a journey and face TROUBLE, are challenged to TRUST God and can believe to have TRIUMP because of His love and Grace.
As the people got closer to Jerusalem, their excitement would grow. They would see the Temple, experience the thrill of being with old friends and relatives and get a break from the toil and persecution they faced daily. Being in Jerusalem would help renew their faith. They would experience worship, the reading of God's Word and a sense of nearness to God.
Jesus would have sung these 15 Psalms when he was 12 years old and went with Joseph and Mary on his first pilgramage to Jerusalem for Passover (Luke 2:41-52) and he would have sung these same 15 Psalms as He made His last pilgrimage to Jerusalem for Passover before His Crucifixion (Luke 22).
Some scholars suggest that the Priest may have also sung these Psalms as the ascended the 15 steps into the Temple area.
I have preached a Sermon from Psalm 120, 121, 122, 123, 124, 125, 126 and will preach a sermon on Psalm 127 this Sunday, February 7th.. Starting on Monday, February 8th., I will post part of my sermon outline (one Sermon outline per week)-- 2/8/10 (Psalm 120)----2/15/2010 (Psalm 121)----2/22 (Psalm 123) and so on until all 15 Psalms have been posted.
Today, I would like to invite you to share your general thoughts with me about the Psalms of Ascent. After that, perhaps we can share our idead on each of the 15 Psalms and Sermon thoughs as they are posted.
